What’s Up?

In Announcements on January 26, 2011 by Naoko Takano

I’m sure you guys have been wondering what’s up and why I haven’t posted anything.  I truly want to!

However, I’m still trying to migrate to WordPress.  Every time I post something new, or somebody comments, I have to re-import everything again.  So far I’ve done this 7 times!  And all of my information is still not transferring completely.  I’ve contacted their support and am waiting to have them import the remaining comments for me.  Once they do, then I can be up and running again!

So if I can ask for your patience a little longer…

It should be in the next couple days now…

(This is a short little post that I don’t care about if I lose it or it doesn’t get migrated…I just wanted to update everybody.:-)

Unfair things happen to good people. It’s a fact.

In Announcements on January 3, 2011 by Naoko Takano

A bit of a depressing post; you’ve been forewarned…

Do any of you know someone who is a perfectly good person but who just seems to attract bad luck?  I do.

She’s a well-meaning, kind-hearted woman who could never be cruel, vindictive, or deceptive towards anyone, yet tragedy always seems to befall her.  Whenever something seems to go well for her, life steps in and gives her a good kick, as if to say “And you thought you were going to be happy.”  It’s some cruel joke, some sort of effort the Forces that Be constantly make in order to cut down someone who really did nothing except maybe be a little naive and believe that this thing called Life was finally working out for her.

This woman has had so many tragedies in her life it seems that if one were to write them into a script, it would instantly be rejected by Hollywood, with everyone saying “This is so unbelievable!!  You can’t have this many things go wrong in a person’s life!  It’s impossible.”  But it indeed is very possible.

That person is my mother.  Someone very near and dear to her just died today, after a sudden diagnosis of cancer and 6 weeks in and out of the hospital.

Needless to say I am not feeling particularly able to blog much right now.

DIY Roundup 8 Favorites

In Announcements,DIY Roundup on December 30, 2010 by Naoko Takano

Thanks so much for submitting your projects into my last DIY Roundup!  I had a great time visiting all your blogs and checking out your pieces.  You’re all so creative!  Here are the top 3 projects:

#3: DIY Rope Necklace

From Samantha over at Dollar Store Crafts, this woven rope necklace looks so high fashion!  (And it’s made from two jumpropes – can you believe it???)  I’m dying to make one of my own!!

#2: Tshirt to Cowl Scarf
Sarah from Simply Step Back made a beautiful stretchy jersey scarf (from her mom’s old tee) with a pretty fabric corsage as a bonus.  Just in time for the cold winter months – and I love the stripes!
#1: DIY Leather Boots

Stacie from Stars for Streetlights gave a pair of boots a new life by gluing scrap leather circles over them.  You’d never know that she didn’t buy them like that – so boho chic!

Thank you so much for sharing everyone!

If your project has been featured above, feel free to grab the button below.

It’s My Birthday!

In Announcements on December 22, 2010 by Naoko Takano

Happy Birthday to me!  (Though I have to stop counting the years soon, lest I feel too old…;-)  Age is only a number!

I’ve spent the day doing nothing!  Well, not really – merely chipping away at my mega-sized must-get-done-before Christmas list etc.  I made 4 pop-up cards this morning.  Well, I designed them all in Illustrator, then printed them out, cut them out, assembled them, wrote the addresses in my best calligraphy, and sent them off.

I have a blister on my thumb from all that cutting.

And finished up yet another batch of my double chocolate peppermint bark (which broke in half when I cut it up), and made some itty bitty chocolate trees for Lil Tot’s class.  Now it’s downstairs for me, to finish up the last 9 of my Japanese New Year’s greeting cards (to be sent to the relatives in Japan), then to bundle up the chocolates to bring to Lil Tot’s school tomorrow, and hopefully sort out the Xmas presents and stocking stuffers I have squirrelled away in the closet…and maybe, just maybe, tackle my email inbox.  (1100 messages, yikes!)

But I have no regrets – it’s a good a day as any other!!

What did you do for your last birthday?  Was it fun, relaxing, a wild birthday bash?  Do tell!

Hub: The Man Behind the Camera

In About Me,Announcements on November 30, 2010 by Naoko Takano

A reader asked who takes my pictures.  That would be this person – my husband, or who I call “Hub” for short.  He is the person who takes my photos…well, at least the photos where I am visible.  For most of my tutorials, atmosphere photos, and close-up shots, I am wielding the camera.

For everything else, it’s Hub.

It is also, incidentally, the anniversary of they day Hub and I started dating today!

10 years to the date.

I can’t believe I’ve been with the same person for 10 years (a decade…all of my 20’s, really).  It’s mind-boggling!

Hub is a very shy, private person and from the beginning insisted on me keeping him out of my blog, never sharing his name or face on the internet. (same for Lil Tot)  He is very kind and loyal, very technical when it comes to electronic stuff (he’s obsessed with cell phones, for instance), is not particularly “chatty” or “social,” and tends to just go with the flow most of the time.  He goes out of his way to make sure other people are content (often to his own personal discomfort) and is incapable of being dishonest or devious in any way.

We met in Tokyo sometime in mid-to-late November 2000, and started dating shortly thereafter.  In 2002 when my visa expired and I had to return stateside, Hub transferred to Temple University in the U.S. so we could stay together.  In 2004 after he graduated, he wanted to move back to Hawaii, where he’d gone to high school.  So we moved there, and got married in April of 2004 (though we put off having the ceremony until a year later so our families from their respective countries could both attend).  In October 2005 our son was born in Honolulu.  In 2007 Hub put in for a transfer through his job, and we moved to Oregon in November.  Now he attends pilot school full-time and is working towards getting his commercial license (he already has his private pilot license), a dream that he first told me about soon after we met 10 years ago.

We knew almost from the moment we met that we were fated to be together.

I know that sounds corny but both of us kind of felt like we had found a “match” in each other.  I, an American having spent 6 years in Japan, and he, a Japanese having spent 5 years in the U.S.  Both of us were fluent in the other’s language.  Both of us had lived too long in the other’s country to just return to life as normal in our own.  That expatriate experience we both had had when we were both very young was a shared experience that not many other people had…which was probably why we clicked so well.  He was steady and dependable and had an offbeat sense of humor.  I think he was drawn to my creativity and “anything-is-possible” attitude.

So, from Tokyo to Philadelphia to Honolulu to Portland...through 10 years of visas, pets, graduations, moves, continents, jobs, apartments, kids, and first houses…it’s always been us two, separated from both of our families by thousands of miles, most of our best friends by oceans or more…it’s been a long journey, and hopefully it’s only just begun!

circa 2001

Happy Anniversary, dear Hub!
